Change Your Life 30 Minutes at a Time
March 8, 2009 by Cassandra Rae · View Comments
Lots of people want to change their life, but few actually embark on the journey because they get overwhelmed with all they want to accomplish. It feels too far out of reach. Besides, who really has the time anyhow? And to this I say…
Changing your life only takes 30 minutes a day so why not start now?!
Seriously, long lasting transformation happens in small, consistent steps. If you make a HUGE change today, then you might not be able to keep it up through the long haul. But, if you make one bite-size change today, then you might actually keep it up long enough to make it a habit. And here’s what I suggest to get started:
Make a commitment to invest 30 minutes of each day just for you. This isn’t time to clean the house, run errands, or pay bills. This is time that you are intentionally setting aside to take care of you because you are the foundation of your life and you haven’t done it well enough…up until now.
Now, I’m going to share with you what I do in this 30 minutes as a springboard for you to consider how you might use yours. First of all, I do this first thing in the morning because that’s what works best for my soul. It serves as the foundation of my day and everything that follows is better for it. Consider what works best for you and then look at how you can adjust your schedule. Don’t allow your schedule to decide this for you. Yes, you must work with your schedule and honor your commitments, but this is about making you a priority.
Next, I sit down with my journal and here’s what I write:
- Free Writing
This is where I capture, clarify, and release my thoughts, feelings, ideas, and stories. Sometimes I write out verbatim what happened to me in the last 24 hours. Other times I write out business development ideas. It doesn’t matter what you write. It only matters that you are exploring your inner landscape and allowing the thoughts and feelings to flow out of you and onto the paper. - Acknowledgments
An acknowledgment is both recognizing the truth and expressing appreciation. This is where you get the opportunity to write down 5 simple truths about yourself – maybe something you did, said, or didn’t do and say – while feeling grateful for who you are right now. One of my fabulous clients told me recently, “You really can’t change until you fully acknowledge yourself first.” She is absolutely right. So acknowledge and appreciate who you are right now with the intention of transforming your life into something even better! - Heart Vision
Oh I love this one! It is so powerful and if you really want to change your life, then this is the one for you. In fact, if you choose to do only one of these practices, then this is the one for you! And it’s so simple. All you do is write down one of your goals as if it has already been accomplished. Then you write down the step(s) you took to achieve it and you describe how you feel now that you are successful! You finish by expressing gratitude. I usually thank God because that matches my personal worldview. You can thank anyone or anything that has helped you achieve this goal. - I am…
Each day is a new day and you get to pick who and how you are. So write down one value you’d like to focus on for the day. For example, I am harmony or I am courage. And then write down 5 simple ways to practice it. Now this one really helps you to create the day you want to have. And whenever you find yourself caught up in emotions or triggered by something someone said or did, then all you have to do is pause, breathe, and remember your “I am” statement for the day.
Okay, folks. There you have it. This is the Daily Practice I do every single morning even when I’m on vacation. It has turned into one of my favorite times of the day and has helped me completely transform my life. I encourage you to give it a whirl and then let me know how it’s going for you.
