I am quirky & proud of it!

This week I reconnected with my quirkiness! I was reminded how happy it makes me feel to be my quirky self.  I’m not talking about doing wild, crazy, and weird things.  I’m talking about having permission to be myself without filtering.

How often do you draft a blog post, website copy, or even an email and you start out writing what you mean and then you edit, edit, edit because you’re afraid of how it might sound or how it will be received?  We edit ourselves out all the time in what we say, what we write, and what we do.  Even in what we wear!

So this week I’ve been writing it, saying it, and doing it before thinking myself out of it and this morning at the coffee shop I saw this beautifully quirky young girl with a crazy wig on.  As soon as I saw her I wanted to take her picture and blog about her.  I paused for a moment and realized that I had a choice to make:

I could follow my quirky self and go ask
a complete stranger for a photo

or

I could listen to the voice of fear that said,
“Don’t do that.  That’s stupid.  You can’t talk
to a perfect stranger.”

SimplyFearless.com dares you to be boldObviously I followed my quirky self and it felt so good!  Luna was happy to have her photo taken and I found out that she made the wig herself for Crazy Hair Day at school.  How fun is that?!

I know in my heart that my success is in my quirkiness.  Now it’s just a matter of allowing my quirky self more room to play, to laugh, to imagine, to express, and to be quirky.  Wahoo!

{Random story about me: one of the very first things that attracted me to my husband is that when we first met he told me I was quirky.  I loved that he could see it in me, that he was bold enough to tell me, and it was obvious he liked me for it and not in spite of it.  Aw…quirky can be romantic too :~}

Everyone benefits when you share:
What do you need to give yourself permission to be in order to receive the success you desire?

I totally agree! I've lived my life dancing to the beat of my own drum, and I'm very happy with how it's worked out. “Taking the road less traveled by”, to paraphrase Mr. Frost. And for what it's worth, the fact that Kate and I can be our own weird selves around each other is part of what makes our relationship work.

I love the idea of embracing quirky! I'm all about being authentic and living out loud even when it's scary. It's never as bad as what we make up in our heads! People do love us for being ourselves. Go ahead, give it a try!

Aw…thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, Brian! This is your first Simply Fearless comment and it makes me happy :~)

I love your willingness to dance to the beat of your own drum. It truly does bring the people and experiences into your life that actually mean something to you.

I miss hangin' out with you and Kate. Drink some of that Hawaiin relaxation elixir for me in honor of Champagne Friday, kay?

Oh what great advice, Vicki. It really is never as bad as we make it out to be in our heads! It really is okay for me to be quirky! Thanks, my Kick Ass Friend!

Thanks, Cassandra. I'm working on plugging in more to the online social network, including getting blog feeds on my iGoogle page (which is how your post caught my eye today). We miss hanging out with you and Will, too. Our next shots of kava will be in honor of you. :)

I LOVE IT! That is so something like I would have done for a theme day at school! I was drawn to dance and theatre from an early age not just because it allowed me to be who and whatever I wanted to be but because it encouraged thinking outside what society views as normal. Of course having a mother that never stopped me from doing my own thing helped too. Here is my favorite picture from my 13th birthday party: http://yfrog.com/3rfreakygirls98j my friends and I decided to get dressed up then walk to the opposite end of my neighborhood to have dinner at Wienerschnitzel. My mother's reaction was to follow us and watch to see what the people there thought. It's a happier existance to be able to just do your own thing regardless of how anybody else sees it. One of my favorite role models has always been Punky Brewster, now there is a girl that did her own thing no matter what!

What a great photo! You've brought up so many yummy things – do your own thing regardless of societal norms – encourage your kids to be themselves – dress up & have fun – happiness is doing your own thing – Punky Brewster rocks! Wahoo! You know, I might not know you, but I like you. Thanks for joining the Simply Fearless Friday fun and if you ever want to write a guest blog post just let me know. It sounds like you've got a lot of fearlessness to inspire us with.
