You are worthy

I just heard Oprah say to Pink, “…that is the true message of all relationships.  Is that it’s about learning who you are first so that you can be more intimate with your true self with someone else.”

Pink’s response was, “And I think you learn more about yourself in the context of a relationship.”

Yeah, call me obsessed, but this is the same thing I think about running your own business.  The journey isn’t about making money.  It’s about learning who you are first so that you can be more intimate with your clients.  And you do learn more about yourself in the context of being in relationship with clients.

“A lot of people like to just start over…but you will come to the same problem.”

It’s true.  You can decide to leave your business behind.  But, you are still left with you.  So why not stick it out?  Look at yourself full on.  Take it in.  Love all parts…good, bad, strong, weak…and just know that no matter what happens on your income statement you are worthy.

You are worthy.

Building a business has been one of the most heart-wrenching and heart-fulfilling experiences I’ve ever been through.  I’ve learned more about who I am and what’s important to me.  It’s almost impossible to run from your “stuff” when you are developing your business because your stuff shows up on your income statement.

Believe me, what you think you are worth will show up.  And in order to grow, you must look at it square in the eyes.  You must look at you square in the eyes.  And nothing is more terrifying than facing your own belief about what you are worth or not worth.

I wholeheartedly agree – owning your own business is the ultimate growth opportunity, and nothing ferrets out your “flaws” and forces you to reckon with your own BS quite as effectively as the business you work so hard to nurture and build. I've been “called out” by my business more times than I care to remember, and have often felt like walking away because I feel I'm not competent enough, or a good enough person to be in business for myself.

The thing is, you are SO RIGHT about the fact that walking away from your business is like walking away from yourself, and I realized a while back that I don't want to give up on myself, so I don't want to give up on my business either. Ever since I've made that decision I feel like I've been more “present” to the needs of my business (since they reflect my needs as well as those of my clients) and I've been paying more attention to what I want my business to be, as opposed to what others tell me my business is supposed to be. And – voila! Growth has started to occur…

Thanks for always being such a positive voice for the “journey”, Cassandra! Your perspective always brings a :-) to my face, and helps me realize I'm not alone with my angst and befuddlement regarding this crazy thing called self-employment – LOL!
