Are you ready to follow your heart?

August 9, 2010 by Cassandra Rae · View Comments

I was invited to an artist’s reception at the Sunnyvale Art Gallery and as I was getting ready I thought, “Wouldn’t it be fun to take my video camera and film one of the artists?  I’d love to find out what inspires them to put themselves out there.”  So that’s what I did!

It was easy to strike up a conversation with artist Jorge Castrillo.  He has such an inviting personality and he immediately opened up about the creative process.  I seriously wanted to go home and paint after listening to him talk about it…

You know, being an artist is one of the most intimate and vulnerable things a person can do.  You pour your heart out onto a canvas, let people look at it, and then they decide if they like it or not.  It’s kinda like running your own business!  Yeah, being a painter – and an entrepreneur – certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.

But, Jorge explains in his video why it’s so important to experiment and put yourself out there.  When you follow and express your heart, you are putting energy and love into motion that goes out into the world, touches lives, and comes back to you in the coolest ways.  The bottom line is…when you create lives are transformed.

Here’s a video of Jorge’s work.  You can reach the artist at (408) 992-0635.

What is your heart asking you to do?

Fabulous post! I wholeheartedly agree that being an artist and being an entrepreneur are very similar. To really be successful you put put your heart out there, open up, be vulnerable and lay it on the line. The magic really happens when the actions you are taking are are in alignment with what is in your heart and what brings you ultimate joy.

I love the question what is your heart asking you to do…just this past weekend when my family decided to do a “ropes” course, my heart asked me to clilmb a 100ft tree. Why? To show my daughters that their mom was still fun and that she could conquer a challenging situation. These days most of what my heart asks of me revolves around raising confident achievers. Thanks for the thought provoking post.

I have become very clear over the years that my passion is beauty in all forms and my mission is to create beauty that uplifts people. I've had several different “careers” but all focused on beauty. I now even blog about “Little Bits of Beauty™”…When I am living my passion and working my mission my life is very good! Thanks for the contemplation

I found your post very uplifting Cassandra and I LOVE your energy! I have been what I would call a mini entrepreneur since my kids were born but had never really found my passion. Suddenly we are moved to the US by my husbands company, I happen upon my work which relates back to when I was an AuPair many years ago and then my company offers me the chance to take Ann Evanston's bootcamp so I can learn how to grow my business using social media networking.
Suddenly I have found something that excites me and fills my heart (other than raising my beautiful daughters). Going along with that is me becoming more of everything, facing my fears – hence the zipline and learning to ski – so that my kids can see that yes, being a mum is such an important job but that we can do that and so much more as well.

And what an excellent way to role model confidence by showing your daughters and yourself that you won't let fear stop you. Woohoo! Rock on, Sista!

Lovely & heartfelt post, Cassandra. Jorge's artwork is gorgeous, and I love how he talked about “doing something from your heart”. He stated that his painting (from the heart) gives him energy; gives him life.
I can definitely relate to that sentiment. As a little girl, if someone asked me, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”, my answer was always, “a writer”. Well, after many years in business, ultimately running my own executive search practice, here I sit… attempting to be a writer! And, now, I am following my heart; connecting with what fills me with energy and connects me to calling.
Thank you for introducing us to Jorge's work and your viewpoint.

This is so inspirational to me! My heart has been whispering to me for years to express myself in the written word and when I was younger, I listened to those whispers, but have stopped listening over the last couple of decades; I am hearing that whisper again, and there have been so many instances where I am being exposed to the messages you share in your blog about living life, listening to your heart, being who you were created to be, I have to believe it is not a coincidence! Jorge is an inspiration, too, and I love how you captured him and his work and shared it with me. Thank you!

Art comes in many different forms. What a great idea to video the artist's show. I really liked Jorge's clouds and water scenes. And the challenge he laid down to all of us.

Cassandra- your video of his pictures went too quickly!! I wanted to spend more time looking at them. Some artists' works you just glance at and move over. His are clearly filled with passion. Thanks for introducing him to me.

I have 2 sources of passion. The first is that I love working with writers and writing myself. Having been a lawyer for 30+ years, I guess, when I was a lawyer, I never thought of myself as being a writer. But when I look back now, I realize that working with the people and doing all the writing (even though it was legal based) was my most favorite parts. So, although it is totally different, it is still the same now working with the authors at Our Little Books and writing myself. It is funny how connected yet different things can be- that your heart will find away, no matter what!

My favorite part is when you note that whether creating or art or business, it isn't for the “faint of heart”…or as I like to say it, you must have “nerves of steel.” You really do put yourself out there in both circumstance, exposing yourself to triumph, failure or mediocrity. I constantly have to remind myself to enjoy the process and not the results…thank you for sharing the art :-)

wow, Jorge is so inviting to watch! i loved seeing his video + his art. I enjoyed how he described how painting is basically therapy for him, + relaxes + opens him up. I feel the exact same way when I cook – I always say, it's cheaper than therapy + a lot tastier. :) but i know exactly how he feels. so instead of grabbing a paintbrush, as he suggests, I think i'll grab a cast-iron pan, my chef's knife, + my favorite spatula + whip up something that inspires me! awesome post.

Lovely to listen to Jorge's passion and to connect the dots. When you do what you love, passion does fill your soul and your spirit, and it gives you the energy to keep making it happen. I do think that we all have our own passion that stirs us. The most exciting thing in the world is connecting to our life purpose. Cassandra that is what I adore about you, your passion to inspire us!

Oh that's awesome Heidi! It takes guts to follow your heart and I love that you are now writing your own way. Cool.

Aw Donna I'm giving you a great big hug right now. Did you feel it? I hope so. *smile* We are truly alive when we are living on the edge of our comfort zone and strengthening that courage muscle. Keep following those whispers. You can't go astray.
